PostHeaderIcon What You Need to Know about Baby Products

Welcome to parenthood! We hope you like it because you’ll be doing it for the rest of your life. As with anything else in life though, it’s important to get off on the right foot. Basically you want to do the best you can for your new addition. Your choice in baby products will let the little one know that you care about them and keep them happy during their developmental years. All of this goes away in the teen years, so make them happy while you can.

Strollers will always be the baby’s main mode of transportation and will help keep your arms the same length now that they were before your little bundle of joy came into your life. There are two types of strollers: the classic, luxury version and the economical, compact version. If you plan on taking mall trips or park excursions, go for the larger stroller. Many even come the option of converting into a car seat. The smaller and lighter strollers are great too because they are lighter. Also as your child grows up, if they are a girl, baby dolls can be carted around as well.

Believe it or not, of all the baby products out there, diapers are the most controversial. The two choices are cloth and disposable. Cloth diapers are better for the environment and don’t fill up landfills. But they’re cloth, so you have to wash them. Disposable diapers are disposable, oddly enough, and for your baby and you it’s all fire, change and forget. Whatever your choice is remember two things: makes sure the diaper is snug but not too tight and that if the diaper has a 25 lbs limit that is the BABY’S weight limit, not the amount the diaper will hold.

In your quest for the perfect baby products you’re going to encounter many, many play pens. The natural inclination is to think you can just get one later, when baby is older. This is not a good idea. A play pen is your baby’s protection when you are not holding them. It’s a safe environment for them to learn to roll over and to stand up. As infants, it’s a place where you know no one will step on them. Don’t be afraid to get one right off.

Your baby will need a bed too. As infants, bassinets are the preferred bed as they are more mobile than full on baby beds. You can move a bassinet from room to room while baby sleeps because no monitor is as good as having baby right there with you. When they are old enough to move into a baby bed, get a bed with high rails. This will keep your baby from escaping and making their own snacks between feedings. (RIGHT!)

What’s a bed without blankets? In fact having a baby without blankets is like having submarine with a screen door: completely useless and a little insane. Blankets provide comfort and shade for your baby. Remember to use heavier blankets in the winter months or in colder climes and lighter blankets in the summer for some shade when needed. Keep lots of blankets on hand too! Of all the baby products on the market today, blankets are still the most versatile items in your parental arsenal. They’re also the most likely to get up-chucked on, so extras will always be needed.

Bottles are the other obvious baby product you will need. Even if you breast feed eventually your child will want some juice, and you’ll want to give it to them. No amount of fruit mommy can eat will help the situation either, so get used to the idea. Remember when looking at bottles to make sure they are dishwasher safe and try not to wash the nipples in hot water, as it can break down some of the components in the rubber and cause the nipple to break down and ruin the hole in or even flake apart and choke baby.

Remember when listening to advice from anyone on what would be best for your child that the people giving it care. Yes, it’s a hassle. In most cases though, it’s not because they feel you’ll be a bad parent. They’re just trying to save you some of the trial and errors they went through themselves. Just smile and nod.

Whilst we all know that breastfeeding gives your baby the best start possible, you may have to stop feeding earlier than you intended, if you are planning on going back to work.

Many mothers now wish (or need in many cases) to continue working once they have had children. A lot of UK employers do give a long maternity leave, so breastfeeding baby for the requisite six months is not going to be a huge issues.

However, if you work for someone who does not give a long maternity leave – or you are US based (***) then you may find yourself back at work before you wish to wean your baby.

This is where you will find an electric breast pump a very useful piece of equipment. See the pages on this site for breastfeeding and breast pumps to give you some ideas and information on how you can best handle this important stage of you and your babies life.

(***) As I am UK based I am not totally sure of the US policy with regards to maternity leave – I am just going on what I have heard in conversations with US based friends who tell me they do not get as long as in the UK – feel free to leave a comment and I will make updates as necessary.
