When To Potty Train? Its just not something that you can set your clock for. As you will know with every other aspect of your childs life – all kids are different. Some will want to go on the potty early – some will make you start to think that they will never be out of nappies!

Before even starting on potty training, you need to be sure that both of you are ready. If you are not sure – leave it for a couple of weeks. The reason for this – if you start potty training before you’re ready, you’re just asking for no end of frustration, tears, promises and threats. That’s before you start on the bribery route….
If you are unsure about potty training readiness, ask yourself a couple of these questions:-

  • Is your little one at least 18 monts old? Maybe 20 months for boys as they do seem to start a little later than girls
  • Are they interested in the potty?
  • Do they respond well to praise and/or rewards?

If you have positive answers to these, then you are probably ready to start. You will know very quickly if its too soon. If this happens – don’t stress or get annoyed with him. Just leave everything for a while and try again at a later date.

A few potty training tips you may want to think about

  • Start to change their nappy near the potty. They will then start to associate the potty with a dirty nappy
  • Empty the nappy contents into the potty and then put them down the toilet. Whilst not pleasant and you will have to clean the potty – again this will provide an association with the potty and being dirty
  • Make sure that anyone else who looks after your child has the right equipment. Once you start you want it to be continual. If he goes to stay with grandparents for the weekend, you do not want him to be using nappies all this time if you have made good progress at home
  • Have the potty just “hanging” around the house and encourage him to sit on it fully clothed. Maybe mention the words you use to describe toilet functions to get him to realise that this is whats its used for. You can then get to start to sit on it with no nappy on
  • One mainly for girls – let them go out with you to buy pretty underwear. Say they will be able to wear this as soon as they are a big girl and keep themselves dry
  • Don’t tell him off or let him see your frustration. This is the fastest way to get him to regress
  • Be prepared to have lots of underwear to wash!!
